There is also discussion on panning in the lass thread “Anyone use MIR”

Power panner works well for me. There was a thread a while ago on vsl site about best way to use it. The concept was to repan the stronger side without reducing its volume.

Andrew,do you also like section B on top with the LS sordino patches?

Select notes in question and copy. Next make sure target track is only track selected in midi edit window. Next click cursor in the track at point where you want copied notes to start. Then paste. No controller data comes with. If you want that, better to copy clips in main edit window.

    Hi Sebastian,

Sorry I didn’t mean to ask for secret information. But maybe you could guide me to help me draw cc curves to control cc1 in my daw. I would like to try to end up with either one dynamic layer sample or the other except when I am actually changing dynamics. And I would like to find the range in the curve where the legato interval samples will match best and sound smoothest. This thread is about sordino. But I would be just as interested in any guidance you an offer for the full lass library too. Thanks!

So with the sordinos, do the lowest mod wheel settings produce mf samples only, and the highest mod wheel settings produce mp samples only, and in between is a cross fade? What values? For example, with default settings, would cc 30 or lower sound mp sample only and cc 90 mf sample only?
And how many dynamic levels on the sordino legato interval samples? If more than one level, do they cross fade at similar cc values?
Inquiring minds want to know… Thanks!

I promised to elaborate on some of the settings I use in MIR several weeks ago, and sorry to take so long. I just submitted a response “requested features” section on a thread called “Sable issue” that gets into some of this. To add a little more here, there is a wealth of information on the VSL chat group. Be sure to experiment with all of the different mic options, they make a huge difference. Don’t position the icons in the room based on what visually looks right; listen for what sounds right, and you’ll probably find that you move the icons closer to the mic. Experiment with different wet/dry mix settings, I tend to move a little dryer than the midpoint. The instrument profiles are very important. If you’re using a Vienna sample, definitely use their profile. I find that for each LASS desk, the Vienna chamber profiles work pretty well, too. If you want a closer detailed sound, move closer to mic and experiment widening the width of the icon. For LASS,it helps to use power-panner to make the image dead-center, and then run through as bus and route the bus into MIR. Hope that helps!

With analog gear, I often heard it was best to use subtractive eq to avoid more obvious artifacts that arose with additive eq. What is the current view with digi plug in eq?

I haven’t forgotten. Just crazy busy with year end deadline. Better tobe too busy than the alternative I guess!

I will put together a post with some of the settings that work well for me. Bear with me it may be several days. Thanks!

I use Mir and love it for my lass and vsl instruments. I need to use power panner to recenter lass instruments before they get processed in Mir. I don’t combine with other reverbs because I love the detail and realism of Mir. But even Mir comes with an extra reverb that can added so I’m sure people are doing that too. The key to Mir is to dig into the details of all the settings and get beyond the presets.

I just sent my last message twice… one a little sharp and one a little flat…

I’m surprised Andrew doesn’t recommend keeping Fc and C tuned straight (instead of FC and A) and pushing A sharp and B flat or vice versa (instead of B and C) so that the string count is balanced. Am I missing something?

Okay, I uploaded to box.com, and here are links to the three audio files:

    1. Excerpt with LASS LS strings dry (no track): http://www.box.com/s/r4e93tpba6ri4hudqnu0

    2. Excerpt with LASS LS strings and VSL MIR reverb (no track): http://www.box.com/s/1zqep9zydiaaqmz8vexq

    3. Excerpt with LASS LS and MIR with track: http://www.box.com/s/dxnrfr5xt5i2rm2mnj6t

My attempt to attach audio files appears to have failed.

How do I do that? Then I’ll send them along…

    Thanks,

    @Andrew K wrote:

Not really. The release samples are pretty much the duration of the ring-out of the instruments. What you can do is perform a longer decay by riding the mod-wheel down towards the end of a note.

Is that because the release samples at lower dynamics are longer? If not, why does riding mod-wheel down help?

    Thanks!

I’m just following up on my original post… I know it’s been a busy time for you. Did you get my files? Did my Violas A act out for you? Let me know…

    Thanks,

    Thanks – I’ll email files.

I don’t think it is a failure to deliver a sample in time. It is almost an overlay of a harsh note on top of the regular note that is supposed to be there. Maybe a transitional sample gone awry?

No worries on timing – I hope the wedding is great!

Thank you, gvalasek! These suggestions are very helpful.

I also identified another variable. It seems that I have fewer problems on “the next playback” if I make sure not to stop the “current playback” in the middle of a note. Perhaps AA does not “reset” on stop, and is simply waiting for more note information? If this theory is right, I wonder if I can find a setting in Logic that automatically sends “all notes off” when I hit stop?
