I was trying to edit the layers as well.. a little tutorial would be most helpful. What I want is to create non vibrato to vibrato crossfades either by creating a new patch or by editing the mod values between 2 patches on the same midi channel. Having gotten used to the Vienna way of string editing Kontakt remains a mystery.

Hmmm… creating a non vibrato to vibrato patch would be somewhat of a different approach from what is already programmed in LASS.

So maybe your “2 patches on the same midi channel” idea might be a good. Thinking off the top of my head, maybe making the CC11 curve be like “/” for the vibs and “” for the non vibs… and that way riding the CC11 would in essence x-fade between the 2. This would allow you to still have access to the dynamics with the CC1.

    Hi,

    I’ll share my approach.

I keep all patches on their own midi channels. In Cubase/Nuendo it’s very easy to select multiple tracks at the same time if you want to have the different patches play in unison. I keep the A.R.T. patches in my DAW and try to have the legatos spread evenly across 2 computers. This allows ART to synchronize with the host, and spreads the legato resources to the other computers.

Depending on the project, I might not need to do the “purist” divisi approach. Sometimes I’ll just use the Divivis C of Full mix Basses as opposed to loading up all it’s divisi sections. and sometimes I’ll use the Full Mix violas to save CPU and voices if I know I’m not going to do divisi writing.

Also, another great benefit of the divisi sizes is that LASS blends wonderfully with other string libraries without cannibalizing them. We all have out favorite “other” string library patches and LASS can add that extra legato touch or spiccato precision that other libraries lack.

But probably the most important thing for me with regards to LASS is how to use the controllers. I have a hardware fader bank that has the following CC assignments:

CC1 controls the dynamics on all sustained patches and the note duration on all short articulations.
CC11 adds an extra level of volume control
CC83 allows you to change the speed of the portamantos and glissandos in real-time with Legato “Speed” patches.
CC111 controls the the Velocity Attenuator on A.R.T and also the Legato Mode on Legato patches
CC110 selects the various A.M.G settings (anti machine gun) … for alternating re-triggered samples.
CC64 (sustain pedal) Activates the ART script and also keeps you in legato mode when playing a Legato Patch. It also enables you to “re bow” the same note when in a legato patch.

The above CCs are crucial to getting the most out of LASS.

Of course, CC7 is always good as a “master” volume trim.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers,

Hi, just got LASS today, and have been playing around with it for a while and LOVE it – I do have a couple of questions though, and I hope this is the right subforum to ask.
is there anyway to control the 1st note’s attack on the legato patches?
and, is there anywhere I can see what cc1 values are assigned to what layer? e.g. cc1 value 1-10=ppp 10-25=pp, or something like that. that would be helpful to me.

    Hi Ken,

Yes, there are a couple of ways to control the attack on the first note of a phrase. You can use the Mod Wheel (CC1) to give you a gentler attack commensurate with it’s dynamic. Try playing a note with the MW close down (say 15) and then play a note and ride the MW up as you play.

The other way is that the patches are programmed so that if you play hard, there should more attack… if you play softly, there should be less attack. This is done with the envelopes… and can be on the subtle side. For a more pronounced control, use the Mod Wheel.

    Cheers,
