I haven’t tried with banks yet, because i didn’t know how to make the script use other MIDI channels.

Basically i work on channel 2, so i would need the script to distribute to 3,4,5,6 instead of 2,3,4,5

Stef, how did you do it? Did you have to convert the wavs?

I can load them at present as wavs, but i can’t make them appear in the list.

gvalasek, the script is great and it makes my workflow a lot easier, most of all creatively.

Problem for me is that they are multis, so i can’t seem to combine them with my current template and load them in an instrument bank, which -i know- makes no sense. But do you think the script could be made so that i can load every one of the auto-divisi on a different track in a different Kontakt Instrument Bank, yet still have the benefit of automatically spreading the played notes over the different instances/divisi?
The auto-divisi would have to be outside the multi though, otherwise it’s impossible to use them with an Instrument Bank.

    What do you think?

Off-topic : Versamina, did you get all the parameters right in the Kontakt options? You need to tick the Kontakt Media Server option in order for it work. Sorry if you know all about this, but i use Logic (Pro 8) also, and i have 10GB and i’m able to load LASS fine with the Media Server.

I always use CC 11 for volume changes (if needed on top of CC 1) and never use CC 7. That’s the reason i don’t encounter the obviously annoying error.

Well, but it isn’t VOLUME I am trying to do, I am trying to control the dynamics of the strings via the mod wheel, and LASS is supposed, I thought, to be pre-wired to respond to the mod wheel for this. I want to be able to record a string part on one midi channel, create a duplicate track (New with same instrument) in Logic, and then on a separate pass, record the mod wheel info (and therefore the dynamics) via a fader on my keyboard which is set to send mod wheel. ???

    Tom

Why would you record the mod wheel data on another track than the one where you recorded your strings?

My way is this : just record your strings (play piano, or whatever). You can then record your Mod wheel over the string part (start from beginning and record again over string part). No need to create an extra track for that. Of course, doing the recording in two steps, you would need to merge the two recorded regions (1.the recorded part, and 2. the mod wheel data), if you want to see the mod wheel data in the Hyper Editor of the Piano Roll. You can merge the regions by first selecting both regions, and then select the merge command from the Region menu at the top of the Arrange window (track list).

Mod wheel is on CC1, so when you setup your keyboard fader be sure that it is assigned to CC 1.

If you have mod wheel data that you want to remove, just open the piano roll (while having the region selected in the track list (top large window, also called Arrange window), click the button in the bottom-left corner (three arrows facing left) to open the HyperEdit and when hovering the mouse over the mod wheel data, press ESC and select the “Automation Select Tool” to select and remove all mod wheel data (or any other midi data) you want out.
If you don’t see the mod wheel data, click the arrow on the left side of the HyperEdit view, where you will see a list of the most common MIDI CC’s, like Modulation, Expression, Breath etc. Also in that list is “Other..” which will open a pop-up of all 127 CC’s, and clicking any one of those will open the corresponding CC in the Hyper Edit.

Hope that solves any issues you have.

Can you not connect the MIDI output of a track to another track in the environment?

Only because there’s more to LASS than meets the eye. The samples are recorded so wonderfully, that putting distortion on them, only emphasizes their beauty, by making the sound just a wee bit more dirty or intenser, if you will. I’ve tried it with other libraries, too, but it doesn’t always sound good. In my opinion the samples need to be recorded at a silent enough level, to qualify for this trick, which is no doubt the case with LASS. And sadly, not with many other libraries.

I just put an overdrive effect on each LASS track, boosting 6dB. Due to the distortion it makes the library sound more resonant, too. Of course this might not be ideal for everyone’s scoring, yet it sounds really fine by me.

I’m all for it, since i experience this in the same way. It’s funny though, when i think i’m playing legato and the mode is sustain.

Thanks for the help. I missed that post by antongiulio, which is absolutely essential and finally gives me the solution i was looking for.
    Thanks a million!

    Thank you for helping out.

Can you elaborate on how you change presets in Kontakt? I can’t seem to do it. Do you change the program/preset always manually in the PianoRoll/HyperEdit or did you manage to do changes with an external MIDI controller/keyboard?

Maybe you can buy a midi controller that can change the midi channel with one button?

Thanks for sharing your workflow. It seems that they’re all different.

I’ll share mine : i have assigned a keyswitch to every Kontakt LASS preset/articulation that i use. I randomly chose CC71. The legato patches will play when CC71 is between 0 and 20. Staccato between 21 and 40, spiccato 41 and 60, tremolos between 61 and 80, etc. This way all articulations are on the same midi channel, and they all receive the same mod wheel changes and other midi data. The downside is that legato and staccato/spiccato also register the same changes of CC110/111 and that the legato is sometimes disabled when i select longer length of the staccato/spiccato :o :) (i could fix this of course, if i had the time and patience to do it)
I have a Kontakt instance for every track/divisi. So i have a different track for Violins A, B and C. I can record them simultaneously when i record-arm all those tracks at once (best using the harmonisation script). All in all i have about 12-15 Kontakt instances loaded for LASS alone, and i have no problems to report. I use KMS and LASS loads nearly 6GB of data in the KMS RAM.

I all works well now, but it’s taken me two days to edit all the presets and setup the multis. Something i might have been able to achieve in under an hour, had i known how to setup an Instrument Bank and change the presets with my midi controller. Sadly the Kontakt manual did not enlighten me with enough information on the subject, or at least not enough for me getting it to work in Logic, assuming i’m not plain stupid.

I’d love to see someone share their Logic/K3.5 workflow, because i can’t seem to find out how to change articulations in an instrument bank.

    Mike,

They’re plug’n play. SSD drives have the same SATA connection like “normal” drives with platters. So you can connect them to a regular sata port, and they don’t need suspension. You can just put them anywhere inside the computer (or connect to an eSATA port possibly, i don’t know). When you install one inside the computer, you just need a free SATA port on your motherboard and a SATA cable, which often is already supplied with your computer. SSD’s don’t give off a lot of heat, and barely use any electricity, so you need certainly no extra cooling.

The downside of Solid-State-Drives is that they are limited as to how many times you can copy stuff on such a drive, but reading from an SSD (like you would do when streaming LASS) can be performed an unlimited number of times without degradation.

Bottom line : if you copy LASS onto an SSD, you have brilliant seek time, immense data rate, and presumably a fail-safe drive (because it cannot crash in the regular sense, in that it has no platters). Of course any electrical device can fail. (I’ve had USB sticks -which are a comparable technology- give up on me) From what i’ve read however, you do get a special software with the drive that will alert you in time, in case something bad is about to happen. Of course, no-one will risk his data to find out how well it works.

Price-wise I think they’re over my budget at this time, but Intel has announced a huge reduction in price, so they will probably cost a lot less in few weeks or months. (In Europe i think the price will become 300€ for a 160GB drive which i assume will be 300$ in the US?)

Be careful though, because my local computer shop assistant told me that the Intel X25-M (which i’m looking to buy because it has the best read data rate), has been withdrawn by Intel because of problems, so make sure you get a “newer”, more recent one.

in reply to: some pitchyness? #30680

ok. Do you think -at the moment- it’s possible to locate these samples in K3.5 and micro-edit their pitch?

For instance in the violas, it’s one “group” (Kontakt sample group) in a legato patch in particular i find that sounds imperfect, but when i select that group and click on the keys below the samples, the pitch is fine. So I definitely don’t understand where the odd pitch comes from.
I don’t want to inquire about the nuts and bolts of LASS here, but if there’s a way for us users to correct the pitch in this stage, without having to wait for the updates, i’d like to know how.
If not, i’ll wait for September.

sounds very beautiful imo. Beautifully layered choir too.

i think you would benefit from the legato tweak, because i find the transitions a bit too fast for the tempo of our piece.

I currently stream the whole of 16-bit LASS from a single Samsung F1, and it’s doable, but not perfect.

My guess is that for DFD streaming you need both 1. excellent data rate 2. excellent access time

Hard disk with platters have quite high access time (or seek time), unless you choose a Velociraptor.
So , multiple drives (possibly in RAID), while having high MB/s, don’t necessarily have super access time. The only solution i’m looking at right now is one of those SDD drives because those have brilliant access time, next to a very high throughput. Will report when i buy one. I’m waiting till prices drop. I want an Intel X25 because it’s got a 250MB/s data rate and 0.2ms seek time. You could even put two in a RAID 0.
If your SATA ports aren’t shared, then every SATA port can manage 300MB/s. SATA II that is, but i assume these are standard on current MBs

The disadvantage of SDDs is that you can only copy stuff on them 1000 times or so. But that wouldn’t be a problem, because i would just copy LASS onto it once and then stream from it, until 2083.

I still don’t get how to do program changes in Logic. I can see how the CC’s are limited to 127, but then what control change is the program change in Kontakt sent on? I tried CC0 and CC32, but all to no avail.

Does someone get this working in Logic with an instrument bank in Kontakt 3.5?
