in reply to: some pitchyness? #30678

I think at least some of the pitchiness is due to a small bug in the script?

    I don’t get it yet.

I have an M-Audio Oxygen 49 with buttons for program change, but those buttons don’t change the program in an K3.5 Instrument Bank. Can you confirm the program change is at CC145?

By the way, I find Colin’s music just brilliant. He really nails an atmosphere, and also has great skill orchestrating. Just to say that i love listening to the demos on his site, and many of my friends (whom i sent the site’s link) say the same.

Is it that LASS is not capable, or that we don’t fully understand the nuts and bolts of runs in the first place?

I mean : listen to soundtracks recorded with a real symphonic orchestra. The timing is often all over the place (most of the stuff one would quantize immediately !), there’s way more reverb on there than on any demo of LASS i’ve heard here so far, the runs often display high fluctuations as to their dynamic range, ..

I hope i don’t offend anyone saying that we might have collectively failed so far in playing real-sounding runs, and maybe it isn’t possible to do with LASS at all, but maybe … it is, and i’m trying to do it every day without micro-editing too much, but just dialing in the tweak parameters right and, doing the right layering divisi-wise and drowning it all in enough reverb to get away with it.

I’ll report when i find ‘my’ perfectly played run (note the absence of “if” here)

    Thanks Andrew,

If there would be issues with assigning the tweak parameters to MIDI cc’s, i’ll report here.

I think i learned that trick from you, if i remember correctly :) Anyway, the runs sound fabulous. Like i said before, this is just the best legato thinkable. I’m very very pleased with it. Why? I can look at any movie now, and think : wow, i can do those strings, too, now.

Quick question : are the Legato tweak parameters (1st note fade, 2nd note attack) MIDI controllable?

I think these parameters are an absolute treat. There’s a vast space of expression between the two legato notes, and i find myself playing runs without problems now.
One trick though is setting the parameters for faster runs only for one of the divisi.

Hey good to hear that it can work. Can you let me know if you did preset changes with CC145 and did you use a ‘normal’ Soft Instrument/Midi Track, or did you use an multi-instrument? I’d love to hear about how to set it up.
I’m using an M-Audio Oxygen 49, which is really inexpensive and well-built and has numerous buttons and faders to do any kind of MIDI changes.

Also, i would think that routing every track/instrument through its own IR reverb is a waste of CPU, because IR’s are simple linear systems and as such, adding up (mixing) every track and sending it through an convolution reverb, would be the same as applying the same convolution reverb to every track and then adding them up (mixing). Onlt the latter takes up loads more CPU. (Where non-linear reverbs are used this is of course not the case)
I usually send all tracks to two or three different busses, each with a convolution reverb. So that’s only three reverbs. And then add some reverb to individual tracks where needed, like solo instruments in general or instruments placed further away might benefit from their own unique reverb to set them a bit apart. Then finally i add some touch of reverb to the master, to blend it all together.

It’s like when they are asked : What instrument is that you play? They say : “viola” and people say : “oh” (silence) :?

I couldn’t get the Instrument Bank to work in Logic. Apparently the preset change doesn’t get through to Kontakt for some reason, hence i can’t change between patches.

I ended up assigning a controller switch (like a keyswitch but by means of a MIDI CC (i took CC71) instead of a key on the keyboard). Quite a bit of work, but now i got a setup that works well for me.

I would check the Audioease website. They have quite a lot of videos and documentation for their excellent plugins.

I use Space Designer here, and it’s okay for now.
I’d love to use WizooVerb as well, though. It was the best reverb ever made, until taken from the market by ProTools, right?

I’m in Europe and RAM prices are pretty high here, too, compared to the US. Thomann in Germany has good prices, but they don’t sell 4GB dimss, so my hunt always brings me to transintl.com If anyone knows of a better place than i’d be interested. The RAM quality is of course also important. That’s why i try to stay away from ebay RAM, for the time being. Sorry for posting off-topic.

To Brendan : Apple RAM is pretty cheap (for Mac Pro 2008 i mean). I think i might put in 24GB altogether. That way i assume the whole 16-bit LASS will load.

Thanks Andrew. That’s exactly the information i was looking for.
By arming different tracks in Logic (click R on the track), i can indeed have the patches play together over multiple tracks.
I don’t have 2 computers, but i will put as much RAM in my mac as i can afford, and report back to how well it performs.
